The following text is from the original listed building designation:

No 12 TR 1457 SE 8/737 (Bon Jon House)

2. 2 parallel range. Front range dated 1774, rear range of earlier origin. 2 storeys colourwashed. Slate roof with crenellated Parapet. Stringcourse. 2 sashes with 'Gothick' heads. Doorcase set in right side passage extension with curved gable over. Rectangular fanlight with 'Gothick' glazing. 4 panelled. door. This building was a Public House called The Bell in the C18.

Imported from the Canterbury UAD: Formerly an inn called the Don Jon Tavern.
The first licence for this address was grafted in 1862 to a Mr John Usher. In 1865 a directory named it DON JOHN HOUSE - Commercial Hotel, license holder was Mrs Usher.

A directory named Mr A J Stephens as innkeeper in 1882, now known as THE AVENUE.

The inn closed in 1907, now a private residence.
