The Canterbury UAD states that Edward the Black Prince in 1363 gave a house as a residence for his chaplains and successors, who served his chantry chapel in the Cathedral Crypt. Little detail is known but the house stood on the corner of Knotts Lane and King Street. The residence in the parish of St. Alphege is no more but is still called 'The Black Prince's Chantry'.

Hasted wote that this house stood near or in the place of the Templar's habitation in St. Alphege Parish and there was then, over a stone porch, the arms of the Black Prince.

In a survey by the King's Commissioners of Edward VI, 1548-9, the message is listed as appertaining to the the late chantry, called Prince Edward's Chantry, within the Cathedral Church. The house had a yearly value of 20s., the out goings being 4d., so there remained a clear 19s. 6d.
