Summary

Richard de Poynings who died in 1387-8 is reputed to have founded a free chapel at Tottington dedicated to either St Stephen or St Michael. In 1776 a plan was drawn showing the building in an orchard 410ft (374.9m) above the yard gate at Tottington, by the side of a track or lane and not at the OS siting. Moulded stones , foundations and part of a pavement were recorded, orientated east to west and measuring 39ft X 22ft 6ins (45.66m X 20.12m). There are no visible signs remaining.

[TQ 74036060]St. Michael's Chapel [GT] Site of. (1) St. Stephen's Chapel [GT] Site of. (2) [TQ 74026052] Richard, Lord Poynings, founded a free chapel at Tottington, temp. Richard II. It was dedicated to St. Michael. In 1776, the author attempted to trace the chapel and discovered it,'by the lane side', in an orchard 410 feet above the yard gate at Tottington. [An accompanying plan, scale c. 12" to the mile, is accurately drawn with consistent scale. It shows the chapel at c.400 feet from Tottington, by the side of a track or lane, and not at the OS siting.] Moulded stones, foundations and part of a pavement were visible, orientated E - W, measuring 39 by 22 1/2 feet. The occupier of Tottington had recently cleared away a mound of debris, 12 feet high. Since the author's visit all the remains have been cleared and not the least vestige now remains. (3) Dedicated to St. Stephen. (4) Add. ref. to Auth. 3. (5) Dedicated to St. Stephen. Founded by Richard (son of Thomas) de Poynings who died 1387-8. (6) Dedicated to St. Michael. In the burial register of Aylesford, is recorded the burial of a wayfarer in Thos. Smith's orchard which may have been the orchard in which the chapel stood. (7) The site of the chapel falls within a featureless pasture field. (8)
