The Canterbury UAD mentions that The Monarch was a double fronted house facing Jewry Lane, was formally a Soldiers' Home and in 1992 one of Messrs Wiltshier's offices.
It was first licensed in 1847 to William Castle who was convicted for selling liquor out of licensing hours. William Bigg was the second innkeeper, also in 1847. Joseph Maxted was the innkeeper in 1849 and Mrs H Collard in 1855. In 1851 the licence was transferred from Joseph Maxted to Francis Thomas Wittey.
The inn closed in 1875.
