Full Description
Description from record TR 15 NW 401:
No 30 St Margaret's Street [TR 14905774 sited from OS 1/1250 1974]. Grade II. 18th century. (1) No 30 St Margaret's Street. 16th century timber-framed building with 18th century alterations. (2)
The Canterbury UAD states that no precise details have been found to date the inn of this name that existed here during the eighteenth century, if not earlier. However, it is known that an inn of the same name situated in the main street was demolished in 1739 for erection of 'flesh shambles'.
Recorded in the Corporation Accounts of 1801 is the rent received for a 'Messuage in St. Margaret's Street formerly called the Salutation adjoining to the Whitstable Market and for part of the Market taken into a shop'. The Whitstable Market was for fresh wet fish.
During the 1930's the site was occupied by Geo. Crump Motor Engineer. Now (2002) the site is occupied by the City Fish & Chip Shop. (3-4)
