Full Description

Description from record TR 15 NW 286:
[TR 14855784] The 12th century undercroft at 36 High Street, "The Mint" was probably the mint. It was originally 44ft by 26ft. (1) No 37 (sic) High Street. Grade II. A restored 16th century timber- framed house. Medieval cellars. No 38 (sic) High Street [TR 14855783-sited from OS 1/1250 1974]. A 17th century timber-framed building restored in early 19th century. (2) The front part of the stone cellar was studied during refurbishment of No 37 High Street. The 12th century rib vaulted undercroft originally extended across No 36 to White Horse Lane and the central piers of the vaulting represent the existing party wall between these properties and extends back four bays from the street. The separate frames above appear to be 17th century. (3) Front part is remains of 17th century timber-framed building. (4) Shop refurbishment at No 37 High Street enabled the front part of the 12th century stone cellar to be studied. The 12th century rib- vaulted undercroft originally extended across No 36 to White Horse Lane and the central piers of the vaulting represent the existing party wall between these properties and extend back four bays from the street. The seperate frames above are jettied at first-floor level with projecting gables and appear to be 17th century. This fabric above both Nos 37 and 36 extends back only one bay, beyond which it has been replaced by a complete rebuild earlier this century. Access was gained to the garret at the front of No 37, and it seems possible that the 17th century work may incorporate some medieval fabric. No 36 has only been observed externally. (5)
