A heritage assessment of the building and its surrouding area suggested that 46 High Street had earlier origins than the 18th century and may have been re-faced during the Georgian period. The building is thought to have been used as a grocers from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century. Extensive alteration works were carried out on the building in the mid-late 20th century, including alterations to the roof, an extension to the building, and changes to floors and walls within the building. Late medieval timbers are thought to be present in the construction of the building.
Historic panelling and 18th century timber panelled doors are present within the house, alongside an 18th century staircase in the upper storeys. Architectural features of the façade are considered to be of historic significance as many of these appear to date from the 18th century.
No. 46 used to be a separate building from No. 47, however, No. 47 was partially demolished and the buildings form a single structure. (2)
