Nos 1 and 2 The Borough [TR 15095816 sited from OS 1/1250 1971]. Grade II. Late 16th - 17th century timber-framed building refaced. (1) No 1. 16th century timber-framed building. No 2. Timber-framed building with later 16th - 17th additions. (2) 14th/15th century block to rear rebuilt after fire (NMR photos). (3)

The Canterbury UAD states that No. 1 The Borough was previously an inn known as The Roebuck.
Around 1875 this inn changed to Gallant Hussar but that closed in 1891.

In 1846 the Licencing List named Robert Walpole as inkeeper; eight years later the inkeeper was Caroline Walpole (widow). When the Roebuck closed as an inn for a time the premises were owned by Paine and Sons (watchmakers). In 1992 No. 1 The Borough was an antique shop.

'Roe' sometimes applied to the female red deer - Roebuck - the male deer. (4)

The building was subject to a historic building survey in 2009. The analysis showed that the two properties started life as a single dwelling or house that was subdivided in later years. This proved to be a timber-framed, medieval open-hall house of perhaps fifteenth-century date. (5)

2. Late C16-Cl7 timber -framed building refaced. 2 storeys and attics plastered. Old tiled roof with 2 gables and 1 tiny hipped dormer. 2 windows, casements in the dormers and 5 light bays on first floors. Later C19 shopfronts. The side elevation is part tile hung, part pebble dash. The rear elevation has 2 tile hung gable ends.
Nos 1 to 4 (consec) and Nos 7 to 21 (consec) form a grade II group. Also forms a group with Nos 72 to 74 (consec) and St Mary Northgate Hall, Northgate.
