Full Description
On the brow of the hill above Kits Coty House are several groups of large stones. On top of the hill are some single stones. 'Three weeks ago' the author investigated one of these stones, just within the limits of Aylesford Common. It was laid across the apparent mouth of a pit cut in the chalk and filled with flints. Local inhabitants informed the author that such pits were frequently found and some had been emptied to provide flints for road metalling. (1) Add refs. Comparing pits with deneholes. (2) There are peculiar geological conditions at the spot mentioned by T. Wright which the author thought indicated that the pit was a natural pocket of clean flints, such pockets and large stones being common. Lengthy and careful examination of the district had convinced the author that such sites were very doubtful. (3) [TQ 7492 6112] Sited - "Small circle of Sarsen stone (now thrown down)". [Auth quotes Auth 1]. (4) The Beale-Poste MSS (a) describe a Karnedd, or sepulchral tumulus, discovered in 1830/1 near Kits Coty House. It was a shallow bowl, 16.5feet wide, excavated in the earth so that the centre was a foot deeperthan the circumference. The body was laid in the centre and then the whole was covered with 10 tons of flints (sic) and turfed over. Pits, 10 feet wide and deep in the same locality are also described. The pits are the same as those described by Wright. (5) Groups of sarsens occur in several places around the lower slopes of Bluebell Hill and they were once much more plentiful. There is no evidence that any particular group once formed a structure. (6) Sketched by Dr Charles 30/4/1830. (7) A number of stones were seen in the area of this old chalk pit but none of any apparent archaeological significance. (8) [For further information on this area of Bluebell Hill, see TQ 76 SW 22].
