Full Description

Description from record TR 15 NW 350:
No 7 Butchery Lane, City Arms [TR 14995779 sited from OS 1/1250 1974].Grade II. Medieval and later. (1-2)

The Canterbury UAD states that this inn was previously owned by Fremlin/Whitbread.

This is a very old building and it has been an inn for about 300 years. In the 1692 Licensing List it was called Morocco and in the following year the Billeting List listed the inn for 2 soldiers. It was then listed as Angel's Castle and then Angel and Castle. During the later part of the 19th century the inn was registered under its present name City Arms.

The Kentish Gazette notes in 1972 that the then innkeeper, Mr Bob Lucas took over three years earlier (he had been innkeeper of the Ben Jonson until it closed) the previous keeper of City arms, Tom White, had been there for 50 years and his father was licensee before him. It is an interesting inn.

The inn burnt down in a serious fire in 2001. (3)
