Description from record TR 15 NW 352:
No 67 Castle Street [TR 14695758 sited from OS 1:1250 1974]. Grade II. An early 16th century L-shaped building refaced in the 18th century. (1) 16th century framed building with 19th century brick facade. (2)

The Canterbury UAD states that the Black Dog was previously owned by Whitbread/Fremlin House.
This appears to have been an ancient inn. The Licensing List of 1692 calls it The Dog. In 1693 it was on the Billeting List for 4 men.
At the end of the 18th century one family appears to have managed the inn: In 1792 John Tivelain was listed; in 1795 Suzanee Tivelain was listed; in 1796 Mathew Tivelain was listed.

By 1803 the inn was listed as Black Dog in a Kent Directory and the landlord paid Land Tax in 1826. It became a fully licenced hotel in 1939 with three bedrooms and other attic rooms. Mr & Mrs Thorogood and then their daughter and son-in-law Mr & Mrs Brothers, were innkeepers for 46 years during the middle of this century. Mrs Hubbard, another daughter of Mr & Mrs Thorogood still lived in a house in Castle Street in 1987. The Black Dog closed 1976.

It is now the very pleasant Hadfield's Fine Jewellery shop and Mr R G Hadfield told me that when he was converting the Black Dog into his shop and living accommodation he discovered some bones beneath the floor-board upstairs. Suspecting foul play he took them to the Canterbury Archaeological Trust and was told they were mutton bones, probably hidden by hungry servants many years ago. (3)

2. An early C16 L-shaped building refaced in C18. 2 storeys red brick. 2 dormers, 3 C19 sashes. Stone coping. Side elevation has an overhang and hipped roof. Doorcase with heavy cornice supported by voluted consoles.
Nos 49 to 67 (consec) form a group.
