Full Description
TQ 72456445. A quantity of Romano British pottery and four Constantinian coins were discovered in the topsoil during scrub clearance on the summit of the North Downs ridge in Wouldham parish in1982. This led to the excavation of the Bronze Age Barrow known as Hill Road Barrow. (TQ 76 SW 47). The pottery included late colour-coated wares, white-slipped wares and red mortaria, all well established types of the third and fourth centuries. Two of the coinswere also of fourth century date: 1. VBRS ROMA A.D. 330-337. No mint mark. 2. Obv. (FL IVL HE) LENAE AVG. Commemorative coin of Helena, mother ofConstantine I, struck under his sons, A.D. 337-341. Probably minted at Trier. Kev. (PA)X PV(BLICA) pax standing left, holding branch and spear. These slight remains suggest a Roman site is located in the vicinity. (1)
