Summary

Romano-British burials, sherds, cinders and briquetage were found at Cliffe Marshes in 1965. A platform of burnt clay was also identified. Further evidence of Romano-British pottery and Salt panning were identified around the site in 1980.

Full Description

TQ 75277793:
RB Burials, sherds, cinders and briquetage found in 1965. (1) TQ 75117787. Cliffe Marshes, At a depth of 1.3m a hard platform of burnt clay about 2m long, going inward from the channel bank for at least 0.5m and underlain by black ash resting on blue clay at 1.5m.

TQ 75127789:
Similar evidence of salt-panning was found on the near-by northward channel at a depth of 1.5m, while eastward, at TQ 75147786 (TQ 77 NE 1034), is another levelled area with Romano-British pottery. (2)

The earthwork remains of what is thought to be a medieval saltern mound have been seen on aerial photographs of this area. They are recorded in NMR 1531926. Air photos of this area were consulted as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(3)
