Summary

Grade I listed building. A parish church built in the 12th century. Alleged to have been built on the site of a 7th century convent. The church was considerably altered in the 13th, 14th and 15th century and greatly damaged by an earthquake in 1579. The central tower fell in 1668. It was reconstructed using the outer walls and a new arcade upon the north side in timber upon the old foundations supports the enormous timber trusses, reminiscent of the churches of the Low Countries, and a plaque dated 1671 records the fact
