Description from record TR 35 NW 45:
A free Grammar School was founded in Sandwich in 1563 by Sir Roger Manwood in the building now called Manwood Court at TR 32775852. It was known as Sir Roger Manwood's School and was moved to a new site in Manwood Road in 1895, area centred TR 33455782. Manwood Court, dated 1564, consists of a two storeyed brick building with attics. It has been completely refenestrated but some hood moulds survive. It is now two private residences in good condition. See GP's AO/64/141/485. (1) 5275 STRAND STREET (South Side) No 91 (Manwood Close) and No 93 (Manwood Court) [Formerly listed as No 91 (Manwood Court)] TR 3258 1/53 19.5.50. TR 3258 5/53 II* 2. Originally Sir Roger Manwood's Grammar School, now 2 private houses. Dated 1564 in iron letters, forming the dogs of beams behind, on the front of the house. Restored in 1892. Thin yellow brick, 2 storeys and attic. Seven windows, 5 dormers with crow-stepped gables terminating in small octagonal shafts. (The finials now missing). Parapet between the gables. The original windows exist in the gables in lead lights. Moulded labels still remain over the windows in the gables and the 1st floor. Sash windows inserted on the 1st floor. Sash windows inserted on the 1st floor, glazing bars intact, and one small bay at the east end. Modern windows on the ground floor. C19 ground floor projection towards the east end, with porch in front of it having a shaped gable. The east and west walls have 2 chimney breasts, each with half a stepped gable on the outer sides of these and a pointed gable of the house between the chimney breasts, these pointed gables terminating in the same small round shafts as the dormers of the main front. Watching brief on extension at rear of house. Trenches revealed medieval pottery, no later than c.1300AD, and possible surfaces earlier than the construction of the town walls.(7)
