Full Description

[TQ 71627581] [Approximate siting.] Roman pottery found in the face of a clay pit c. 1955 about 5'below the ground surface. Some of the pieces are in my (the finders) possession. [A sherd of Upchurch ware and the intact rim and upper portion of a large vessel of coarse ware] (1) Enquiries of the Alpha Cement Works regarding this and perhaps other finds had a negative result. The method of extracting the clay in this area leaves nothing but vast sheets of water behind. Unless the operators of the grabs notice anything all record is lost (2). Additional references (3,4).
