Full Description

[TQ 72257547] Small bronze age palstave found 1920. (1) A single palstave found at Westcourt in 1920. It is 6.75" long, the blade 2.7" wide, and is much oxidised (2). Cliffe: Palstave in Rochester Museum (3). Cliffe."Palstave found Feb. or March 1921 within 50 yards of west Court Farm" [Illustrated] [also] Higham:" Small bronze socketed celt found on western margin of West Court garden in 1920 by Mr. F. Wright. See also Cliffe ? Same specimen" (4). The evidence for siting [by Authority 1] is not known and the find spot must therefore be considered as approximate only (5). This implement came from the edge of the quarry nearest the farm garden; it was sent to Rochester Museum. To the best of my knowledge it was the only one my father found (6). Inspection of the ground revealed that the quarry referred to had come to within a few yards of the garden wall of West Court Farm but it has now been filled in. Enquiries at the farm house, where the late Mr.Wright's grandchildren still live, produced no further evidence. It seems likely, however, that only one implement was found, and that the evidence of Authority 4 is, as they themselves suspect, a recording duplication (7). Palstave, unlabelled, but with dimensions identical with those given by authority 2, is in Rochester Museum (8). Additional index entries and references from relevant site reports (9-13).
