Full Description

Half a Roman mortarium, stamped twice on the rim with the name "VALENTINANVS" and dated to c.A.D.70, was found on the foreshore at Higham by W.H. Brown of Horton Kirby. Donated to Maidstone Museum (See No 29.1950) (1). The find spot TQ 70307572 is approximate only,@ and falls in an area of inaccessible soft mud (2). Additional index entry and reference (3,4). Soft mud, too dangerous to proceed out onto mudflat in 2005 coastal survey to see if there were any further remains(5)
