Findspot record TQ 77 NW 49 - Mesolithic flints and associated animal bones, Cliffe Marshes

Summary

Mesolithic flints and associated animal bones found by the Southern Water Authority during the sinking of 63 boreholes on Cliffe Marshes. Also found was evidence of the spread of valley gravels at the end of the last Ice Age. The bone assemblage included six small antlers. Was this the remnants of a Mesolithic hunters camp? A number of flints were also identified at the time which would appear to support this interpretation.

Full Description

In 1984 the Southern Water Authority made available the summarised records of 63 recent boreholes in a zone across the Cliffe Marshes, giving evidence of the spread of valley gravels at the end of the last Ice Age. Near the cliffs, Mr G Slater has reported many animal bones centred on TQ 728 767. Six small antlers were among the bones, and it is suggested that they were the remains of a mesolithic hunters camp. Flints were numerous near the bones, but artefacts were not sought by men excavating the site (1). Additional reference (2).
