A heritage assessment carried out in 2016 summarised the history of the house: "The building dates to the late 17th century with several extensions and alterations taking place between this time and the end of the 19th century. An account of the property in 1870 assesses the value of the house to be £84.3…
The grounds of the house were formerly much larger but a proportion was sold in the latter part of the 17th century. It was at this time the property came under the ownership of William Sharp who conveyed it to Joseph Neame in 1694. The estate was then conveyed to Mr John Nelson c.1773.
When he passed away in 1789 the estate was bequeathed to the children of William Castle, the son of his wife by a former husband. Under Thomas Castle, the son of William, more of the land was sold although the date is unknown." (2)
