Full Description

A massive LBA barrel-shaped urn (restored) 15.6" high, almost certainly from a burial, was found in 1918 during trench digging in Frindsbury parish between Chattenden Barracks and Islingham Farm: now in the British Museum. It was discovered, accompanied by fragments of a second unormanented urn, in an upright position, 3' deep, in a deposit of black earth and wood ashes. The urn is of a soft brown ware and has a raised band round the girth decorated with large circular depressions at intervals. The second fragmentary urn (not exhibited in the British Museum) is of coarse pottery resembling Hallstatt ware from Park Brow, Sussex, and is likely to be of the same age. (1) (Area centred TQ 75257194) Local enquiries revealed that the trench digging mentioned above probably refers to a `strong point' and trenches which were constructed during both World Wars in this area. No information as to the exact find-spot of this transitional L.B.A./IA urn burial was obtained. (2) The present location of the finds was not confirmed. (3) The finds described in authorities 1-3 lie within the area was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. No traces of associated features such a barrow were identified on the available aerial photographs. The 1918 trench digging mentioned in authorities 1-2 was associated with an extensive area of practice trenches recorded as Monument 1545095. (4)
