Full Description

Two Roman interments were found in 1906 about 200 yds. E. of Chattenden Lane at the Lodge Hill Powder Magazine. The first grave was 2' deep and contained an urn (illus. No.1) partially filled with calcined bones. The second grave-group, 7 yds. away, consisted of a cinerary urn (smashed beyond repair) with bones, four pseudo-samian vessels (illus Nos.2-5) two other complete vessels (Nos. 6 & 7) and two pots smashed to atoms. Illust. photograph AO/58/57/1. (1) A box of fragments of pottery from a third grave has been sent to Rochester Museum by the Superintending Civil Engineer of Chatham Dockyard. The vessels have been restored and comprise a cinerary urn, a cup and three paterae of pseudo-Samian and a two-handled flagon. The other interments were subsequently brought to light, but as the vessels accompanying them were found smashed in the ground the workmen paid no heed to them. (2) Five cremations found 1907 and subsequently near the west entrance to Lodge Hill Powder Magazine. With them was much Samian now in the Rochester Museum, probably late 1st or early 2nd cent. (3) (Area centred TQ 75837334) sited from information in auths.(1) and (3) but exact find-spot not ascertained during field work. (4) The present location of the pottery in Rochester Museum was not confirmed. The Museum is at present undergoing extensive alteration. The Curator, Mr. J.S. Taylor has promised to communicate to the Division any information he can discover regarding finds from this site. (5) No further information. (6) The location of the finds noted in authorities 1-5 falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project, but no features associated with Roman burials were identified during that survey. All of the land in the immediate vicinity has been considerably modified by the construction of the Lodge Hill Armaments Depot. (7)
