Full Description

TQ 77997158 A Roman cemetery was found in 1894 when excavating brick earth in the Hoo Lodge brickfield, in field 451 (see O.S. 25") about 100 yrds. S. of the roadway on the N. side and the same distance from the hedge on the west side. Cinerary urns were found in the bottom of a straight trench, c. 3' 6" deep and running N-S, which had been filled with top-soil. Most of the urns were underburnt and fell to pieces on exposure to the air. Others were broken by workmen to see what they contained: all contained calcined bones and ashes and one is said to have contained a snake bracelet which looked like gold. One urn was preserved intact and given to Mr. G.M.Arnold. A small burnt clay box, c. 12" x 10", covered with a flat tile and containing calcined bones, was found at the lower level than the urns in the same trench. In 1903 a tetradrachm (silver) of Phillip II of Macedon (359-336 BC) was found in the brickfield. Presented to Rochester Museum. The top-soil of fields 451 and 184 contains much broken Roman pottery and roof tiles etc. Centred TQ 780717. (1-3) Finds from this burial ground, including cinerary urns, seen in Maidstone Museum. (4) Nothing was seen in these fields which were under a cabbage crop. The Greek coin is not in Rochester Museum and its present whereabouts is unknown. (5)
