Beacon. A beacon at Hoo St. Werburgh was noted on a map of about 1570. William Lambarde's "Carde" of that date shows a beacon at "Hoo", but no more precise location can be derived beyond the parish name. The parish falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project, but no features that might correspond with the sixteenth century map detail could be identified during that survey.

Full Description

[TQ 79 72 - sited to parish name only] A beacon at Hoo St. Werburgh. William Lambarde's "Carde" of c. 1570 shows a beacon at "Hoo" and a total of 52 beacons in Kent. The beacon system dropped out of use after 1640. (1) The parish of Hoo St. Werburgh falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project, but no features that might correspond with the sixteenth century map detail could be identified during that survey
