17.6.83 (Dining Hall and Tower)

Dining hall. 1909 by Sir Henry Tanner. Pebbledashed with red brick dressings and plain tiled roof. Single storey nine bay hall, with tower and low kitchen wings to north.Plinth, buttresses and pilaster strip quoins and wooden modillion eaves cornice to roof with 2 lead cupola air vents. Three large open pedimented projections on main elevation break through eaves level, with keyed and gauged semi-circular mullioned and transomed windows, the central with an apron below,those to left and right with double half-glazed doors with corner hoods. Six mullioned windows high up to eaves. Return elevations with large semi-circular headed windows, the eaves cornice raised up over them, with half glazed doors below. Tall battered tower, each face at the top with a clockface and curving iron balcony, with modillion eaves cornice to lead cupola and flagstaff. Single storey kitchen and service wings to north and east. Interior hall with 9 bay barrel vault with prominent transverse ribs, modillion eaves cornice. Panelled lower walls, seats and benches all original, as are 4 large iron corona lucis.
