NORTHBOURNE BETTESHANGER TR 35 SW 4/4 Garden terraces about 50 metres west of Church of St. Mary
GV II
Garden terraces. Late C19. George Devey for Sir Walter James. Brown brick and dressed stone. The terraces consist of 4 terraces with low flint, with brick coping, retaining walls and small piers with ball finials, the upper terrace with a large round base, probably for a fountain. Above this are upper terraces consisting of 2 flights of 7 steps with vases on side piers, leading to an oval walled area with balustrading and urn finials on piers to side stairs. The head of the whole complex is a set of stairs with a central flint panel with a portrait bust set in a roundel.
