Full Description
Description from record TR 35 SW 48:
TR 331521. Northbourne. A tall wooden smock mill dating from 1845 stands the north side of the road running south west from the village. Although worked by wind until the 1920s and by electric drive until the 1950s it is now emty and derelict without cap or sails, though thewindshaft is left. (1) TR 331521. The New Mill at Northbourne has been derelict for many years. Two sweeps were blown off during a gale in July 1915 and the mill finished its working life with only one pair. There were three sets of stones but wind power with two sweeps would only drive two at a time, on Austin tractor being used for auxiliary power and in calm weather. (See illustration card no 1) No machinery remains but the windshaft is still in position. (2) TR 331521. The New Mill at New Mill Farm, Mill Lane, Northbourne, is in a poor state of preservation. Built in 1845 by Messrs Holman of Canterbury, for Richard Fuller in whose family it has remained to thisday. General history of the mill. (3)
