NORTHBOURNE BETTESHANGER TR 35 SW
4/3 Garden terraces and plant tubs about 50 metres south of Betteshanger House
GV II
Terraces and plant tubs. Late C19. George Devey for Sir Walter James. Brown brick, with stone and terracotta urns and plant pots. The terraces consist of low brick walls, with stretches of balustrading, and with frequent piers, those on the corners and gateways with urn finials. The walls range about 30 metres east, return and 20 metres to south, and then again about 30 metres to south. They are approached by a gravel avenue along the east side of which is ranged a group of 11 terracotta plant tubs or urns, alternately small and round and large and octagonal, on contrasting round and octagonal bases of flint, tile and encaustic tiles. Both the tubs and bases have the James crests and badges moulded into them.
