Full Description

Description from record TR 35 SW 53:
(TR 33485217) TR 35 SW NORTHBOURNE THE STREET (south side) 4/42 Vine Farmhouse (formerly listed 13.10.52 as The Vine) GV II* House. C17, extended 1911. Red brick in English Bond with plain tiled roof. E - plan. Two storeys and attic on plinth. Hipped roofs with stacks to left and right and to end left and right, 2 hipped dormers and 1 hipped dormer on each projecting wing, and wooden bell turret to centre. Mullioned and transomed windows with labels of 5 bays altogether, with 2 windows on each floor of return face of projecting wings. Central 2 storey porch with four-centred arched doorway with label over, and plank and stud door. The left hand wing is a C20 rebuild, a plaque on left return records: This wing was erected on the original foundations by Frederick Morrice, 1911. Rear elevation with regular fenestration of mullion and transom windows with plain doorway with plank and stud door. Interior: oak staircase and panelled walls of C17 pattern, but probably C20 work. Vine Farm, Northbourne, in the village street. A puzzling 17th century house, of brick, laid in English bond. Two-storeyed, E plan, a two-storeyed porch forming the centre bar of the east mullioned windows, of two, three and four lights, with a transom, and hoodmoulds. The arch of the doorway is four-centred under a square hood. This regular arrangement is the result of an enlargement early in the 20th century; but pre-enlargement photographs show that the house already had a hipped roof. (2)
