Summary

Building 69 (guardhouse), North Barracks. Early 19th century guardhouse with a rendered late 19th century extension to the left of the front. In the 20th century a verandah, with reused 19th century cast-iron columns, was added to the front. Built of yellow stock brick with rubbed brick headers, Portland stone dressings and a hipped slate roof. The single-storey building has a single depth plan

Building 69 (guardhouse), North Barracks
GV II
Guard house. Early C19 (shown on Dawson's map of 1831). Yellow stock brick with rubbed brick headers, Portland dressings and slate hipped roof (stacks removed). Single depth plan. Single storey; 2-window range. Central door flanked by sashes, with rendered late C19 extension to left of front (NW). C20 verandah, with reused C19 cast-iron columns, added to front. Outer end facing street has a rubbed brick round-arched window, bricked up, in a matching recess, with a single ashlar quoin and a cart stone at the base. Straight joint to connect with perimeter walls extending to rear of Buildings 65-68 (qv). INTERIOR not inspected, but only pre-C20 feature to have survived is a late C19 (not original) cast-iron fireplace. HISTORICAL NOTE: Part of an important group of buildings relating to the military hospital at Deal; linked by a wall to the officers' houses (Buildings 65-68 (qqv)) forming the south-east corner of the former hospital. Included for group value.
