TR 25 SE EASTRY HERONDEN
7/135 Heronden 11.10.63 GV II*
House. 1766 for William Kelly, extended c.1930 and altered c. 1970 by Phillip Jebb. Plum coloured brick with red brick dressings with plain tiled roof. Two storeys and attic on plinth with moulded plat band and moulded modillion eaves cornice to hipped roof with 3 flat roofed dormers, and large moulded stacks to left and to right. Regular fenestration of 5 glazing bar sashes on first floor and 4 on ground floor with gauged heads. Central door of 6 panels in panelled surround with traceried semi-circular fanlight, pilasters, triglyph frieze and pilasters, triglyph frieze and pediment. Garden room c.1930 to right with 4 Doric pilasters supporting modillion eaves cornice to hipped roof. Two large glazing bar sashes and central double French windows. Interior; staircase, dog-leg and half landing with winders, with turned balusters with square base knops on open bracketed string with wreathed handrail and ramped dado panelling. Panelled room with fluted frieze and modillion cornice, late C17 in date and here reset. Dining room with 2 moulded alcoves either side of marble fireplace, with moulded frieze and - other late C18 details. From 1784 to 1794 the home of Captain John Harvey, mayor of Sandwich 1774,and hero of the Battle of Ushant, 1.st June 1794 as commemorated in Eastry church and Westminster Abbey (monuments by John Bacon) (See Country Life, August 11 and August 18, 1960;see also B.0.E.
