Full Description
A gold finger ring of Celtic type was ploughed up at a depth of about 8 inches in a field on Bettenham Farm (TQ 81 39) in or about 1868. Itis formed of two twisted gold wires, one of which is thin and of uniform size throughout, and the other three times as thick and taperstowards each end. Nothing else was discovered at the same spot but anurn containing bones had previously been found in a neighbouring field (TQ 83 NW 5). the ring is in the possession of George Neve of Sissinghurst. (1) The owners of Bettenham Farm, resident since 1921, were unaware of this find. Although a certain amount of deep ploughing etc has been done on the farm, nothing of archaeological interest has beenfound. (2) Gold finger ring found at Cranbrook in 1868. It is possible that thismay be of the Roman period, but the type to which it belongs is clearly Celtic. (3)
