Monument record TQ 83 NW 5 - Undated cremation burial, near Bettenham Farm, Cranbrook

Summary

A cremation urn containing the remains of bones was found near Bettenham Farm a few years before 1868. A gold ring was found in an adjacent field in 1868 (See TQ 83 NW 4). The urn was thought to have been destroyed and no subsequent discoveries have been made in the field.

Full Description

A few years prior to 1868, an urn containing bones was found by drainers in a neighbouring field to where the gold ring was found on Bettenham Farm (TQ 81 39), Cranbrook parish. [See TQ 83 NW 4.] The urn was destroyed. (1) The owners of Bettenham Farm, resident since 1921, were unaware of this find; although a certain amount of deep ploughing etc has been done on the farm, nothing of archaeological interest has been found. (2)
