Monument record TQ 83 NW 9 - 16th century pottery works, Hareplain, Biddenden
Summary
An early 16th century pottery kiln was found in May 1969 during ploughing of a small mound. An area of burnt soil and a mass of pottery sherds was revealed although most of kiln appears to have been destroyed. The site was excavated by Maidstone Museum and amongst the finds at the site were jugs, bowls, storage jars with lower bungholes, jars with lids and dishes. Glazing was evident on all these artefacts. Comparable pottery has been found at Pivington (TQ 94 NW 7), Lamb's Cross, Chart Sutton (TQ 74 NE 19), and at Aydhurst (TQ 74 SE 7). Excavation revealed that the oven floor and the base of the oven wall remained. No trace of the flues survived but the natural clay was burnt in patches around the kiln.
