Description from record TR 35 NW 95:
TR 332583. Toll Bridge, Sandwich. Built in 1773 (1755?) with stone arches at the ends and the centre part probably a raised timber platform. In 1892 the centre part was replaced by an iron swing bridge. (1)

5275 The Toll Bridge High Street (west side) TR 3358 1/129A Grade II Built in 1773 (1755?) of Portland stone having centre portion dated 1892 to open as iron swing bridge, and upon the south and north ends stone arches. Central portion probably Dutch type timber raised platform before C19 replacement. (2) Lifting mechanism and counterweight for central span housed within the N abutment. Original cast-iron deck of lifting span replaced by steel. Lifting mechanism for 18thC central span was a hand cranked capstan, replaced by hydraulics. gate accross S end of bridge removed in 1950s. (3)
