Full Description
A beacon at Tenterden (see illustration card) is shown on William Lambarde's 'Carde' of c.1570, showing 52 beacons in Kent. They dropped out of use after 1640. (1) 'Beacon Oak Fields', centred at TQ 88733405 and 'Beacon Oak Meadow', centred at TQ 88753384, are situated upon the high ground at the northend of Tenterden village. The area is now developed. No further information. (2) It may be of some significance that the beacon at Tenterden is depicted on Lambe's 'Carde' (Authy 1) on top of the Church Tower (TQ 83 SE 3) one of only two examples on the map. The other is at Lydd. (TR 02 SW 6) (3)
