Full Description
(Area centred TQ 8833). A decorated Medieval jug from Tenterden presented to Maidstone Museum in 1893 by a Mrs Judges of Benenden. Little is known of the circumstances of its discovery; a lable glued to the base states 'found in a pond under 12 feet of mud at Tenterden'. It is probably an isolated find having been dropped into the pond and recovered during dredging and cleaning. The fabric is dark grey, buff to brown with lighter brownish grey surfaces, the core is grey to buff-brown. It is sand tempered, hard, well-fired, wheel thrown and trimmed off with a knife around the sagging base, no glaze or slip. The shape is rather squat ovoid: 29.9 cm in height: the rim diameter is 11.3 cm and the base diameter is 17.5 cm. The decoration on the two bevels just below the neck is in the form offinger channels (see illus) and just below this and on the body are two girth-groves which enclose a single incised wavy line pattern. Jugs decorated with wavy line pattern separated by straight horizontallines are a common occurrence at and soon after 1250. They must have been excavated at Eynsford Castle (TQ 56 NW 69) and a moated site at Leigh (TQ 54 NE 1) (1)
