[TQ 8650 4969] A broken Mesolithic "Thames pick" was found by Mr. Weeks at Greenhill (and given to Maidstone Museum (Ace. No. 76. 1960) Mottled brown flint, irregular cross section with remaining end displaying characteristic scar left by a tranchet blow; the other end is missing. Length (broken) 4.1" (a) Found 1955. In store (b). (1) Mr. F. Weeks is in his 90th year and could only indicate an approximate positioning for this find which occurred in arable. However this is not an isolated find for Mr. Weeks showed me a wide selection of implements including flakes and scrapers of possible Neolithic date picked from the fields about the farm (area centred TQ 865497) over a number of years. The site occupies an elevated position at the top of the steep escarpment which commands an extensive view across the weald. (2) Additional bibliography. (3)(4)
