Full Description

"A" Romano-British pottery sherds at TQ 8829 4684. "B" Bloomery slag at TQ 8849 4665. A 2nd century A.D. cremation burial group was found in 1961 at Coldharbour Farm, Egerton, by the farmer, Mr Fraser. The group consists of part of a Samian dish of form 18/31 with most ofthe glaze missing, and a coarse globular jar of gritty grey ware, about 9 inches high with a cavetts rim 8.75 inches across. The jar contained calcined bones. In store at Maidstone Museum, Acc. No. 3.1963. (1) Mr Fraser indicated the findspot at "A" TQ 8829 4684, within a drainage channel which he was recutting at the time of discovery. In a later search of the area, sherds of Romano-British pottery were found in a heap of dredged material at "B", TQ 8849 6554, at the edge of a pond, and a few pieces of bloomery slag, identified by Mr I. D. Margary as Straker Type D, within two fields then under the plough in an area centred at TQ 8835 4670 (d). All the finds are in store at Maidstone Museum. No further finds are reported by Mr Fraser, and a search of the fields in the area revealed nothing further. (2)
