Full Description

[TQ 59505680 sited to area midway between Town House, TQ 55 NE 45 and church, TQ 55 NE 14]. Two chambers were found by Mr J Hill in his nut plantation, midway between his house, the Town House and the church in 1895. The first chamber was 3 feet 9 inches deep. The walls were 2 feet 7 inches thick, faced inside with thin roof tiles, laid in courses, of perhaps, 16th century date, while the exterior was composed of ironstone obtained from the immediate locality. Upon the floor were 5 low walls of tiles. In each wall were two small arches to enable heat to penetrate the area of the chamber; these draught holes were in line with two stoke-hole arches. The western wall of the chamber extended beyond the stoke-hole, forming the eastern wall of a second hypocaust. There were 4 low walls upon the floor, placed in the opposite direction to those in the first chamber, the stoke- hole being in the west wall. The interior of both chambers had been subjected to great heat, especially the lower walls. During the excavations a few pieces of pottery of 16th or 17 th century date were found. These chambers were probably kilns for burning bricks or tiles. (1)
