Monument record TQ 84 SW 3 - Roman urns and ritual shaft, Leggs Wood? Frittenden

Summary

Two Roman urns were reportedly found in a deep shaft in 1858. They were identified as black earthenware, similar to Upchurch ware. They were dated by type to the late 1st or early 2nd century A.D. Further surveying of the hole indicated evidence of decayed vegetable matter, but also timberwork suggesting a ritual use for the pit.
