13/25 Maplehurst Mill GV II Mill. 1756 for David Papillon of Acrise and extended mid C19. The old mill of red brick with weather boarded gables and plain tiled roof, the new mill of timber framing, weather boarded with slate roof. Two parallel ranges. Old mill: 2 storeys and garret, reducing to 1 storey and garret to north. The ground floor/basement thickened and weathered. Half-hipped roof. Boarded door and 2 casements to west (left side), and 1 wooden casement on garret and 1st floor, with dovecote on 1st floor, and 2 casements on ground floor with central boarded door. Double terracotta plaque to left of door inscribed: D P 1756. The new mill (facing east) of 3 storeys and hipped roof, with brick and stone flat arch over stream. Three wooden casements on 2nd floor, and 4 each on 1st and ground floor. Loft doors on each floor to right return. The wheel is attached to the old mill to west, in the re-entrant angle of the two ranges; an overshot wheel 8 feet wide and 10 feet in diameter, driving 3 sets of wheels. Interior: carved on a beam in the old mill the letters S and I divided by a line. This marks the (still current) parish boundary between Staplehurst (Maidstone District) and Frittenden. The mill machinery, of various C18 to early C20 dates survives with remarkable completeness, although the water-driven mechanism is no longer operative, and is very fully described in M J Fuller and R J Spain, Watermitts (Kent and the Borders of Sussex), pp 95-102). Attached to the south east is the older mill house separately described and fully in Frittenden Civil Parish. (Item 13/26)
