The following text is from the original listed building designation:
EARL STREET 1. 5278 (North Side) Nos 42 & 44 TQ 7555 NE 1/96 II
2. Early C19. 3 storeys now stuccoed. Hipped tiled roof and eaves cornice. 2 sashes and 1 window space to each house. No 42 has a later doorcase with fluted pilasters, pediment supported on consoles, rectangular fanlight and door of 6 moulded panels. No 44 has a round-headed recessed doorcase with semi-circular fanlight and door of 6 fielded panels.

In 2011 a watching brief on foundation works for a new extension to the rear of the property found two brick-built cess pits either side of a wall that formerly divided the rear yard in two. They probably date from the time of the buildings' construction. (2)
