Full Description

Maidstone Public Baths were built in 1851-2 on a narrow strip of land between the street known as Fairmeadow and the east bank of the River Medway. The architects were Whichcord and Aspitel, responsible for a number of buildings in and around the town. Later in the C19 a further swimming pool block was added to the south and west of the original building. The baths were listed at Grade II in 1973, but in 1976 they were demolished under listed building consent to make way for the widening of Fairmeadow to form part of Maidstone's inner ring road.

FAIRMEADOW 1. 5278 (West Side) Public Baths (Formerly listed as Municipal Baths) TQ 7555 NE 1/134 30.3.73. II
2. 1851-1852 by Whichcord and Aspitel. This consists of a portion of 1 storey red brick set endwise to the road. Hipped slate roof. Central portion has stout balustrading with central shield and scroll. Stone moulded cornice, end quoins, rusticated pilasters and 3 round-headed arches, the centre one with a blank shield above, the others with vermiculated keystones. 2 round-headed sashes in moulded architraves. On each side there are portions of 1 storey, of slightly lower elevation, with sash windows. Late C19 red brick swimming bath is attached on the left hand£side.
