Summary

Grade II listed building. Main construction periods 1809 to 1811 Wall and main entrance to Maidstone Prison. Most of the perimeter wall belongs to the first phase of construction of the prison, between 1810 and 1822. The present gatehouse is listed as dating from 1809-11 but actually dates from circa 1891. The original entrance was in the west wall in the block to the south of the Sessions House. This was superseded by the present gatehouse but was reopened in 1904 when the prison was divided into two separate establishments. The original gateway was reopened to serve the northern half of the prison which housed convicts.

BOXLEY ROAD 1. . 5278 (South-East Side) Wall and Main Entrance to Maidstone Prison TQ 7556 BE 4/179 26.7.73. TQ 7656 SW 5/179 II GV
2. Built 1809-l81l by Daniel Alexander. The wall is of Kentish ragstone about 20 ft high and tapers inwards towards the top. Buttresses at regular intervals and a stringoourse about 6 ft from the ground. The main entrance is along County Road. This is built of Kentish ragstone ashlar. The central part projects slightly and has a pedimented cornice. Wide moulded cornice below. Long and short quoins. Round-headed entrance with stone voussoirs. Small barred window on left hand side.
