Full Description

TQ 873504. Possible earthwork visible on APs. (1) A linear earthwork has been traced running in a N-S direction immediately above the W-facing slopes of a small valley to the W of Platts Heath, from TQ 87465098 to TQ 87175000. The best preserved stretch extending 200.0m across cleared woodland, comprises a large bank and ditch facing west with a slight counter- scarp bank. The main bank is up to 8.0m in width, and 0.7m in height, the lower bank is much slighter; the ditch is 5.0m wide and up to 0.7m deep. At the southern end the feature has been reduced, first to ditch and lower bank, then to a terrace which fades out leaving a lynchet-like slope above the natural slopes. This finally terminates but the line of the work is marked by a hedgerow. Northwards, after a break over a pasture field and modern road, the work reappears as a terrace some 8.0m in width, backed by a lynchet- like slope, which gradually reduces to nothing. Again, the line of the work is indicated by hedgerows until northerly steep slopes are reached. The overall traceable distance of the work is some 1000m and thus is probably a boundary rather than a defensive earthwork and possibly of Early medeival date. Surveyed at 1:2500. Note other "earthworks" on the photo are the result of wood clearance. (2) TQ 87175002 to TQ 87465098. The linear earthwork lies just below the crest of a fairly steep valley slope, and much of its length runs roughly parallel to the valley floor. It is most probably a early Medeival boundary work, but this is by no means certain. It has been badly mutilated since first discovered. TQ 87175002 to TQ 87185015. Evident as a scarp up to 0.7m high in the narrow hedgerow. TQ 87185015 to TQ 87215031. A steep scarp up to 1.8m high which is preserved in the hedgerow although the fringes of the scarp are being clipped by the plough. There is hardly any evidence of a terrace on the lower side. TQ 87215031 to TQ 87255051. This section of double bank and ditch which was the best preserved length has now been completely effaced. Its course is now only visible as a vague cropmark on the 1983 OS APs (83/004,142). TQ 87255051 to TQ 87275064. This part has never been identified. Nothing visible on OS APs. TQ 87275064 to TQ 87355081. The scarp, up to 1.0m high, and its c.8.0m wide terrace which presumably marks the position of the ditch and outer bank are being spread by the plough. TQ 87355081 to TQ 87465098. The linear is evident as an 0.5m high scarp in the hedgerow. Resurveyed at 1:2500. (3)
