LENHAM CHURCH SQUARE TQ 8952 (south side)
10/143 Nos. 4,5,6 and 7 and Court Lodge Cottage 26.4.68. GV II
House row. Early C15, with some re-use of earlier materials and with later alterations. Timber-framed core. Front elevation patched red brick with occasional grey brick headers. Left gable end flint on ground floor, ragstone on first floor, with tile- hanging above that. Stone, possibly C19,returns for few feet round front elevation on both floors. Plain tile roof. 1 1/2 storeys on high stone plinth. Roof half-hipped to left and gabled to right at junction with slightly lower right end of No. 6. Multiple brick ridge stack towards left end, large plain brick stack in front slope of roof off-centre to right, and brick stack in rear slope of roof of lower end of No. 6. No. 4, to left, has 2 hipped through dormers, one on either side of stack, No. 5 has a large 2-storey rectangular bay with hipped roof immediately left of the large plain stack, and No. 6 has 2 hipped eaves dormers to left and a third in lower right end section. Door to No. 4 beneath stack, with 4 fielded panels, semi-circular fanlight and flat bracketted hood. Door to No. 5 to left of 2-storey bay, 1/2-glazed, with flat bracketted hood. Panelled door to No. 6 with a narrow window to either side; small semi-circular rubbed brick arch over door joined by short band to smaller arches over side windows, forming symmetrical composition. Left gable end has, towards front, a tall stone jamb of arch to former Medieval gateway to Court Lodge with small stone door with triangular head behind it. Rear lean-to to No. 4, short rear wing to No. 5 Interior: exposed beams and posts and crown-post roof. Interior partly inspected.
