The following text is from the original listed building designation:
LANGLEY
1674/0/10006 LEEDS ROAD
24-JUN-02 Barn to the northwest of Redpit
II
Originally threshing barn, later stabling. Mid C18 with minor C20 alterations.
EXTERIOR: Timberframed, clad in weatherboarding on brick base with roof hipped to south and half-hipped to north, now covered in corrugated iron sheeting. Three bays with additional bay to south probably used for cart storage. West side has double cart doors with original pintle hinges. East side has lower double doors, also with pintle hinges and a stable door.
INTERIOR: Wall frame has midrail and diagonal tension braces. Jowled upright posts. Roof has staggered purlins and original rafters. An unusual survival is the low horizontal plank partition and diagonal braces on either side of the central threshing floor. This has been raised to the north to form a full-height partition for stabling. A floor has also been inserted in the central bay above the tie beam and some C20 stall partitions have been inserted to the south. (3)
This feature is recorded in the AB Heritage Heritage Appraisal for land at Green Lane, Langley, Kent. The appraisal required an assessment of heritage assets within 500m of the land due to have proposed development and this barn was within the area. The report states: "The grade II listed barn is located in a relatively isolated position, immediately adjacent to Leeds Road and c. 10m to the east of the proposed development site. Trees and hedges surround the barn on the northern and southern sides. The south-east elevation faces onto a yard with a small house and outbuildings at the south-east of the yard. The immediate setting of the barn is its relatively isolated roadside position, with small scale residential development of Redpit to the east and south, only one building of which, might be associated with the barn. This has been compromised to a degree by the addition of further small scale residential development at Redpits, adjacent to the barn, since the late 20th century.
The wider setting formerly fields is now mostly modern suburban or rural residential surroundings with scrubland and remnant heathland beyond further to the east and west. The significance of the barn north-west of Redpit can be considered to be evidential, aesthetic, and historical with the Historic England listing description highlighting key original architectural details of the building and its development. The setting is considered to make little contribution towards the significance of the barn as a heritage asset." (4)
