ST MARY'S HOO CP TQ 87 NW 3/77 21.ll.66 The Old Rectory - II
House. Late C18. Red and brown brick with straight joint on north and south fronts indicating two builds. Hipped plain tiled roof. 2 storeys; 4 window front with glazing bar sashes irregularly spaced. Central entrance with C18 doorcase. 2 large projecting bays on north. The Rectors from 1788 to 1875 were R. Burt, father and son. The Rev. Robert Burt senior performed the illegal marriage ceremony between George IV and Mrs Fitzherbert in December 1785.

This feature is recorded in the English Heritage Historic Area Assessment of St Mary Hoo Parish. The report states: "A rectory was constructed in the late 18th century to the north of the church, probably built for Reverend Robert Burt, who acquired the advoswon of St Mary Hoo and High Halstow in 1786, the year after conducting the marriage of George, Prince of Wales and Maria Fitzherbert…The Old Rectory (listed grade II) is a late 18th century red- and brown-brick two-storey house, apparently constructed in two phases, with a weatherboarded extension. It was possibly built for the Reverend Robert Burt who lived here from 1786 and 1791 and perhaps altered and enlarged by his son Reverend Robert Gascoyne Burt who occupied it until 1875." (2)
