Full Description

[Marginal] Neolithic occupation floor, Lower Halstow. Occupying an area c. 60' square are a series of hearths resting on the marsh clay at c. 3' above O.D. and beneath c. 7' of subsequent deposits. Around the hearths are scattered flint implements and flint-working debris. The implements are characterised by leaf-shaped arrowheads, derivative petits tranchets and axes of the types allied to the Thames pick. Pieces of red ochre and a single coarse sherd were also found. (1) TQ 8641 6797: Neolithic floor (a) A selection of cores and flakes from this site is held in Maidstone Museum store but no details of the excavation date are known. The site had been destroyed by sea erosion and lies below high water mark. (2). Additional references (3,4).
